The “Cry Babies 10” began a long legacy of sisterhood in the Fall of 1973, 45 years ago. There has been 45 years of sharing in celebration of victories, milestones, weddings, births of children, grandchildren and even deaths. There is a love that has withstood the test of time. The first celebration was on the 10th Deltaversary in 1983 in Nassau, Bahamas where it was decided to gather every 10 years to celebrate and in between if the opportunity presented itself. There is a commitment to maintain the bond that was created 45 years ago.
On June 1, 2018 the Cry Babies 10 made Lake Granbury in Granbury, TX the destination of choice. On Friday, Brenda Parker Simpson (Olathe, Ks); Julia Patterson Bonner and Carnelliue Styles Braden (Houston, Tx); Fran McFarland Morgan, Barbra Maryland Jacobs and Brenda Robinson Hatfield (Shreveport – Bossier City, La) met at the home of Roberta Reed Brown in Dallas to begin the caravan to Granbury. Missing from the group were Pam Rachal Cockell of Washington, DC and Linda Brown Fields of Leesville, La. Of course, greatly missed was Lillian Priest who went home to be with the Lord and will always be a part of the group in spirit.
The journey to Granbury set the pace for a fun and interesting weekend. Little was it known that the city of just over 9,000 is less than 2% African American; therefore, 7 ladies going around in “Delta Red” were certainly a novelty. There were comments like “Are y’all a singing group?” and “I called my Mom to tell her y’all were in here” added a little spice to the adventure. Granbury opened its arms to the “Cry Babies” and presented the perfect atmosphere for friends of 45 years whose main purpose was to be together. The Lakehouse was the base with lots of time sitting on the patio watching exotic birds and boats go down the channel. The perfect place for coffee and conversation. A trip to the movies to see “Book Club” certainly did stir up conversation because most could relate. Visiting the Doll Museum, a stroll to the beach, shopping, lots of eating and lots of time together without much outside distractions made the weekend special.
The prayer of departure was filled with tears as the realization set in that the meeting should be more often than every 5 years. God has truly blessed the group to continue the bond for 45 years with love, support, and sisterhood.
